About Massachusetts Phone Directory

Phone numbers for Massachusetts are spread across a lot of separate places. State agencies publish their own contact pages on Mass.gov. All 351 cities and towns run their own sites. The education agency, the university campuses, the hospital systems, the utility companies, and the Trial Court each keep their own lists, and the area codes are tracked by the state telecom regulator and by the national numbering administrator. Finding one number often means bouncing between five sites. We built this site so you can land on the right directory, area code reference, or hotline the first time.

Why We Built This Site

Massachusetts publishes phone information in layers, and the layers do not line up neatly. The state handles services that counties handle elsewhere, so benefits, licensing, public health, motor vehicles, and the courts all sit with state agencies. Local business stays with the town, which means clerks, assessors, permits, trash, and local police live on 351 separate municipal sites. County government has been abolished or absorbed in several counties, so a county switchboard usually does not exist, even though sheriffs, district attorneys, registries of deeds, and court divisions still use county names. Add the education agency staff search, the UMass campus directories, the utility emergency lines, the Mass 211 referral service, and the nine area codes that cover the state, and the picture gets crowded fast. We gather the lookup tools, contact routes, and reference data for each of those in one place.
